Harlem Jazz Shrines FestivalWhen: May 9, 2011 at 9:00 p.m. through May 15, 2011 at 10:00 p.m. Location: Columbia University and venues through Harlem
The Apollo Theater, Harlem Stage and Jazzmobile present the HARLEM JAZZ SHRINES festival—“The Apple’s” latest entry into the annals of what makes New York the epicenter of the Jazz world, globally. This 7-day festival celebrates the classic clubs and venues that made Harlem USA the jazz mecca beginning in the 1920’s. It’s a nostalgic look back at the greatness of the past, but this festival’s pulse is the present, showcasing an amazing range of today’s top and emerging talent and showing that what’s happening right now in Harlem is hot. From big bands to small combos, from “jams” to swing parties, the inaugural HARLEM JAZZ SHRINES festival is destined to keep you “up,” rushing from venue to venue and set to set, for seven days straight out of jazz heaven.

The rich history and diverse expressions of jazz can be attributed to a dedication to musical innovation and improvisation. Kwame Brathwaite, a photographer with over 50 years of photojournalistic experience in Harlem, captures some of the pivotal moments of innovation and improvisation in jazz history. This special exhibition is on view in the lobby of the Miller Theatre at Columbia University School of the Arts. Artwork on display is for sale by the artist. Since its inception, jazz music has inspired artists to represent the arrangements of its rhythms and nuances of its tone through photography, painting, collage, and other media. Join curator, scholar, and author Professor Robert O'Meally, photographer Kwame Brathwaite, and curator Erica Agyeman for a brief discussion addressing the visual representations of jazz.
JAZZ AND THE SPIRIT: THE ARTS OF HARLEM IN THE AMERICAN RELIGIOUS IMAGINATION

From the Spirituals, through Blues and Jazz and right on up to Hip Hop, religion has occupied a place of privilege in black musical repertoires. At the same time, Harlem—that premier staging ground of African-American cultural expression—has in many ways figured pre-eminently as a sacred place and space in American history. Wedding these themes together, Professor Marcellus Blount, composer, pianist, arranger Courtney Bryan, Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III and historian Josef Sorett explore the spiritual dimensions of Harlem’s aesthetic legacies and contemporary vitality.

Call for Artist ApplicationsDeadline: Apr. 1, 2011 Columbia University’s Office of Government and Community Affairs offers art exhibition spaces for artists residing in upper Manhattan that do not have affiliation with Columbia University. Exhibition spaces are located in the reception areas of the Russ Berrie Medical Science Pavilion at 1150 St. Nicholas Avenue @ 168th Street and the Lasker Biomedical Research building at 3960 Broadway @ 166th Street. Exhibition Date: Jan. 17 - March 3, 2011 Location: Russ Berrie Medical Science Pavilion, 1150 St. Nicholas Avenue (at 168th Street) The Office of Government and Community Affairs at Columbia University is pleased to present the works of Harlem-based artist Jing Chen, a graduate of Columbia University’s School of Social Work. Jing discovered her passion for creating oil painting and other media art works while she worked as a Social Worker in NYC. Jing began developing her vision as a channel for renewed understanding, using oil painting and other media art works to express her complex vision and thoughts.
