On November 8th, 2008, thirty-seven-year-old undocumented Ecuadorian immigrant, Marcelo Lucero, was murdered by a group of teenagers in Patchogue, Long Island. These seemingly All-American kids had decided to go hunting for beaners, (a racial slur for Latinos) which had become an increasingly common pastime in the area.

Ojito discusses the changing face of immigration in America, and explores how local attitudes, stereotypes, and a growing discontentment with the countrys evolving identity ultimately contributed to Luceros death. Hunting Season uses the murder of Lucero as a lens to examine the larger issues of immigration, exploring the growing presence of immigrants in suburbia, and how the struggle to assimilate into non-urban areas--which offer fewer resources and a less welcoming environment--has led to isolation, tension, and violence throughout the country.
